Gigantic Bug vs. Pat Benatar
I opened my back door this afternoon to take some pictures of my progress on Liesl and some new yarn I bought, and I discovered this right outside the door:
I don’t deal well with these kinds of things–icky creature sorts of things, that is. It’s not that I think they should die or that I would actually kill one myself. I just prefer to live under the illusion the giant bugs and I live in totally different realms. The thing that really makes me uncomfortable about having to confront large insects and arachnids is that I am always afraid they are going to jump at me. I blame this fear on my dad who was always convinced that spiders were jumping at him. He talked about “jumping” spiders so often, the fear has sunk into my brain. So rather than confront my fear of having this giant green thing jump at my face, I went out front to take my pictures. The down side of taking pictures out front was that there were more people around to bear witness to my knitterly dorkistry.
Thus, my updated pictures of Liesl aren’t that great. But at least you can clearly sleeve the first finished sleeve.
I got the needles I needed to finish the sleeves yesterday afternoon and managed to complete the first sleeve while I was watching SNL yesterday. I started the second sleeve as well, but ended up having to rip back because the fan and feather pattern was off. I think that I’ve figured out what’s wrong, but I’m still going to need to work a few rounds before I’ll be able to really tell if everything is okay. The first sleeve only took about half a ball of yarn, so I should still have at least one ball of yarn to add to the length of the body.
When I went to the yarn store, I took advantage of a $10 voucher I had and picked up a skein of blue Malabrigo.
This is actually the first skein of Malabrigo I’ve ever bought, although thanks to TurtleKnitta I am very familiar with its super-soft, kettle-dyed awesomeness. And with my voucher, I was able to get this skein and a set of double-pointed needles for a whopping $9. Sweet. This will ultimately become a slouchy hat for my sister, Erica, for Christmas.
In other holiday news, we decided this weekend to have a Halloween party for Aidan’s birthday (which is on Nov. 5th). I’ve got big ideas brewing for the party and for my costume. I’m dressing up as Pat Benatar and using the “Love is a Battlefield” video as inspiration. Look for Pat in the green dress in the second half of the video, because that’s what I’m going for.
Will I be able to replicate such a gaudy 80’s look? Better yet, will I be able to learn Pat’s sweet dance moves? I guess we’ll see . . .
